  • Food & Drink, post-Brexit. What do we care about?

first_imgIt’s been a year since the EU referendum exposed striking regional divides. Bray Leino’s new report, ‘The Trouble with Bubbles’, examines regional consumer attitudes towards Britishness, health and wellness, fads, trends, and how brands are marketed.  It compares consumers in remain-voting London with the Brexit-supporting North East and North Wales. How influential is social media? Is ‘craft’ really all that? Is turmeric a trend or a fad? Do people outside London value Britishness more than in the Capital? • Alex Wood pads All-Star résumé with another scoreless outing in Dodgers’ 1-0 win

first_imgLOS ANGELES >> Alex Wood sure looks like an All-Star.Unlike Justin Turner, the Dodgers left-hander is not the subject of a campaign to rock the vote and erase the snub that left him out on Sunday. For now, Wood has to settle for the likelihood that performances like Wednesday’s will keep him first in line to replace any star (like teammate Clayton Kershaw) who won’t be able to pitch next Tuesday in Miami.Wood didn’t give up a hit until the fourth inning and struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings Wednesday night as the Dodgers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 1-0.“One day at a time,” Wood said, chuckling at questions about an All-Star invitation. “I would feel very honored if that happens, very humbled. It’s something you kind of dream about as a kid so it’s hard to even fathom right now. “I’m just trying to give us a chance to win. I would never look at it (Wednesday’s start) as an audition to get into the All-Star Game. Hopefully it happens. But if it doesn’t, it is what it is.”Wood has given the Dodgers “a chance to win” when he starts with historic success.Wednesday’s win moved Wood to 10-0 this season and dropped his ERA to 1.67 (lowest in baseball for anyone who has thrown at least 80 innings). He is the first Dodgers pitcher to start a season 10-0 since Ed Roebuck in 1962. Roebuck pitched in relief. Wood is the first Dodgers starter to go 10-0 since Don Newcombe in 1955 (both Wood and Newcombe did get one of their 10 wins in relief).According to Elias Sports, Wood is only the sixth pitcher since the All-Star Game was created in 1933 to reach the break with at least 10 victories and no losses.“I think a lot of it is you see your teammate in Clayton and how he goes at guys and prepares and pitches every game like it’s conceivably his last,” Manager Dave Roberts said. “I think every time Alex takes the mound he has that kind of pitching-with-a-purpose mentality in every pitch. “He’s been like this from the first pitch he threw this season.”Wood’s start Wednesday was the sixth time he has turned in a scoreless outing, the 10th time in 13 starts he has allowed one earned run or less.Held hitless into the seventh inning by Kershaw on Tuesday night, the Diamondbacks didn’t get their first hit off Wood until Jake Lamb looped a two-out double down the left-field line in the fourth inning. Wood promptly struck out the next batter, Brandon Drury, to strand runners at second and third. The Diamondbacks were 0 for 4 with two strikeouts when they did get a runner in scoring position against Wood on Wednesday. For the season, batters are hitting just .125 (6 for 48) against Wood in those hazardous situations.Wood did all of his work against the Diamondbacks with no margin for error. The Dodgers had just four hits in the game, went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position themselves and scored the game’s only run in the second inning. Chris Taylor singled and scored from first on a double by Yasmani Grandal.“I hadn’t seen a whole lot of (Diamondbacks starter Zack) Godley but he’s got a very good curveball. He sinks it down, keeps it down and really competes,” Roberts said. “We didn’t get a whole lot of good swings off him. Fortunately, CT gets a hanging breaking ball and gets a base hit up the middle and Yasmani gets a first-pitch fastball and hits it to the gap.”Pedro Baez came in to protect the 1-0 lead in the eighth and threw five consecutive balls to start the inning, prompting a mound visit from Roberts. The manager did not berate Baez but chose to “reassure” him, asking for him to slow things down and “have a little more clarity.”“He just told me he trusted me,” Baez said through an interpreter. “We talked about two pitches that were barely outside. … He told me to just continue to do my job.”The attitude adjustment worked. Baez’s next six pitches were strikes — five of them at 98 or 99 mph. He worked out of the inning, striking out Dodgers tormentor Paul Goldschmidt.A night after giving up a three-run home run to Daniel Descalso, Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen closed it out with less drama for his 20th save. The second consecutive win over the second-place Diamondbacks (and the Dodgers’ 22nd win in their past 26 games overall) moved the Dodgers a season-high 4½ games in front in the National League West.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

  • Angioplasty and stent placement- peripheral arteries- discharge

first_imgAlternate NamesPercutaneous transluminal angioplasty – peripheral artery – discharge; PTA – peripheral artery – discharge; Angioplasty – peripheral artery – discharge; Balloon angioplasty – periperhal artiery – dischargeWhen You Were in the HospitalYou had angioplasty (ballooning) of a peripheral artery, a blood vessel that supplies blood to your legs or arms. You may have also had a stent placed. These procedures were done to open a narrowed or blocked peripheral artery.Your surgeon inserted a catheter (flexible tube) into your blocked artery through a tiny hole in your groin. Your surgeon used x-rays to guide the catheter up to the area of the blockage. Then your surgeon passed a guide wire through the catheter to the blockage. A balloon catheter was pushed over the guide wire and into the blockage. The balloon on the end was blown up. This opened the blocked vessel and restored proper blood flow to your heart. A stent is usually placed to prevent the vessel from collapsing again. What to Expect at HomeYour groin puncture may be sore for several days. You should be able to walk farther now without needing to rest, but you should take it easy at first. Full recovery from this procedure may take 6 – 8 weeks.Self-care If the doctor put the catheter in through your groin:Walking short distances on a flat surface is okay. Limit going up and down stairs to about 2 times a day for the first 2 to 3 days.Do NOT do yard work, drive, or play sports for at least 2 days, or for the number of days your doctor tells you to wait. You will need to care for your incision.advertisementYour doctor or nurse will tell you how often to change your dressing (bandage). If your incision bleeds or swells up, lie down and put pressure on it for 30 minutes. If the bleeding or swelling does not stop or gets worse, call your doctor and return to the hospital, or go to the closest emergency room. Or, call 911.Walk short distances 3 to 4 times a day. Slowly increase how far you walk each time. When you are resting, try keeping your legs raised above the level of your heart. Place pillows or blankets under your legs to raise them.Angioplasty does not cure the cause of blockage in your arteries. Your arteries may become narrow again. To lower your chances of this happening:Eat a heart-healthy diet, exercise, stop smoking (if you smoke), and reduce your stress level.Take medicine to help lower your cholesterol if your doctor prescribes it. See also: Cholesterol – drug treatmentIf you are taking medicines for blood pressure or diabetes, take them the way your doctor has asked you to.Your doctor may recommend that you take aspirin or another medicine, called clopidogrel (Plavix), when you go home. These medicines keep blood clots from forming in your arteries and in the stent. Do NOT stop taking them without talking with your doctor first.See also:Clopidogrel (Plavix)Aspirin and your heartWhen to Call the DoctorCall your doctor or nurse if:There is swelling at the catheter site. There is bleeding at the catheter insertion site that does not stop when pressure is applied.Your leg below where the catheter was inserted changes color or becomes cool to the touch, pale, or numb. The small incision from your catheter becomes red or painful, or yellow or green discharge is draining from it.Your legs are swelling. You have chest pain or shortness of breath that does not go away with rest. You have dizziness, fainting, or you are very tired. You are coughing up blood or yellow or green mucus. You have chills or a fever over 101 F.You develop weakness in your body or are unable to get out of bed.ReferencesCreager MA and Libby P. • Economic Sacrifices Starting to Pay Off – Minister Phillips

first_img Business confidence will improve further with Jamaica having passed the first quarterly IMF test The best measure of confidence is the boost in the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) index The many economic sacrifices which the country has made are beginning to yield positive results Minister of Finance and Planning, Hon. Dr. Peter Phillips, says the many economic sacrifices which the country has had to make over the past few months are beginning to yield positive results.“Already, there are hopeful signs on the economic horizon that I think it would do us well to pay attention to,” the Minister told business stakeholders on Thursday, August 29.“The results of all of this (sacrifice) are beginning to be seen in a positive way and we are beginning to turn the ship of our economy in a positive direction,” he added.Dr. Phillips was addressing the Jamaica Deposit Insurance Corporation’s (JDIC) Financial Markets Symposium and Fair held at the Bank of Jamaica auditorium in downtown Kingston.Among the encouraging economic signs, the Minister highlighted, is the “slight but important and significant improvement” in investor confidence resulting from the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) approval of the Extended Fund Facility for Jamaica in May of this year.Dr. Phillips predicted that this business confidence will improve further with Jamaica having passed the first quarterly IMF test. Also, he noted that the country’s inflation targets have not only been met, but have been exceeded, pointing out that inflation in the June quarter was more than one per cent below the forecast range of two to three per cent.“We did exceed also our targets for the Net International Reserves (NIR) set for the June quarter and based upon the evidence, thus far, in the second quarter, we are seeing the prospect of a return to growth,” Dr. Phillips stated. He said that perhaps the best measure of the improvement in confidence is to be seen in the boost in the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) index over the last few months, with growth of close to six per cent over the April to June quarter. The Finance Minister remarked that also among the positives is the fact that the Central Treasury Management System, which was scheduled for completion as part of the economic programme for March 2014, has been implemented six months ahead of schedule.“This is perhaps the best news of all, from my point of view, and for which the public officials in the Ministry of Finance and the other Ministries are to be commended,” he stated. He noted that the implementation of the system, which deals with the overall management of public sector finances, means that Jamaica is no longer paying interest to borrow its own money from the private financiers. This, he said, will result in significant savings for the Consolidated Fund and for smoother management of public resources. The Finance Minister, while hailing the positive developments, cautioned that much more needs to be done, as the country remains in a period of significant economic change. • Stars Respond To SOS For Orangutans

first_imgCelebrities from across the globe are responding to a charity’s SOS call to support critically endangered orangutans in Sumatra.Support for the Sumatran Orangutan Society’s (SOS) second Jungle VIP online auction, which starts on 1st March, is flooding in from internationally recognised names including Coldplay, Dominic Monaghan, Sebastian Vettel, Natalie Portman, Ellen DeGeneres, Seth Green, Graham Norton and Gillian Anderson. Last year the auction raised over £10,000 for vital conservation programmes, and it is hoped that similar success will be had this year.Among the supporters is British actor and celebrity Joanna Lumley, donating an exclusive script page from 2002’s Ella Enchanted, signed by stars including Minnie Driver, Anne Hathaway and Joanna herself, and Coldplay have donated a limited edition lithograph of their Viva La Vida album artwork, signed by all the band members. Other auction lots include Lord of the Rings photos and a blu-ray signed by Dominic ‘Merry’ Monaghan and Billy ‘Pippin’ Boyd, and a signed racing top worn by Formula 1 three-times World Champion Sebastian Vettel.Says Joanna Lumley: “I really love orangutans and met many of these majestic animals when filming in Indonesia. What struck me forcibly was how incredibly alike we are as species: they have truculent teenagers, enchanting babies, naughty toddlers, grand old uncles and resigned hard-working mothers. The most thrilling thing in my life was looking into the eyes of a mother orangutan with a baby on her back: I knew her and she knew me. They are not called the People of the Jungle for nothing. It is our duty to do all we can to save them and their way of life.”Says Dominic Monaghan: “The orangutan as one of our closest cousins clearly feels the stress and anguish that WE might if our homes were destroyed and our families killed. If we are part of the generation that allows this majestic animal to become extinct, future generations will ask us ‘why didn’t you do more?’ SOS DO more.”Helen Buckland, Director of SOS, says: “Sumatran orangutans share 96.4% of our DNA, but they stand to be the first Great Ape to go extinct if we don’t act now to save their forest home. Sumatra is the only place in the world where orangutans, tigers, elephants and rhinos coexist – and all are critically endangered. The Jungle VIP Auction will help us raise vital funds to protect orangutans, their forests and their future.”The Jungle VIP online auction will take place between 1st-10th March at ebay.co.uk/JungleVIP.The first Jungle VIP Auction took place in March 2012, raising over £10,000, with items donated by Nicole Kidman, Jane Asher, Tim Minchin, Radiohead, Chris Evans, Nicola Roberts, Geri Halliwell, Newton Faulkner and many more.

Members of the public are also being asked to join the Jungle VIPs and sell their own items via ebay, with proceeds benefiting SOS.Sharing 96.4 per cent of our DNA orangutans are among our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom and are the only red ape.The number of Sumatran orangutans is estimated to have fallen by more than 90 per cent since 1900. With just 6,600 left in the wild, the Sumatran orangutan is Critically Endangered, and could be the first Great Ape species to go extinct.Orangutans are the ultimate ‘Jungle VIPs’ – they play a key role in rainforest regeneration and are a fantastic flagship species. By helping them we help countless other species including critically endangered tigers, elephants and rhinos. The Sumatran Orangutan Society is dedicated to protecting orangutans and their habitat through rainforest restoration, community-led conservation, education and campaigning. For more information please see www.orangutans-sos.org.last_img read more

  • Conservatives vague on Sisters in Spirit promise

first_img(Photo: Justice Minister Rob Nicholson (centre) during a press conference Tuesday. APTN photo)APTN National NewsOTTAWA-Justice Minister Rob Nicholson remained vague Tuesday on his government’s plans to deliver on a promise to create a $10 million strategy to deal with the “disturbing number” of murdered and missing First Nations, Metis and Inuit women across the country.Nicholson said the Conservative government had set aside the money, but was still in involved in discussions with the provinces and police forces at the federal and provincial level.“We want to get it right. We are looking at a number of different options,” said Nicholson, talking to reporters in Ottawa. “I know there are discussions between federal and provincial law enforcement agencies across the country on this issue…we will be making an announcement in due course.”Nicholson, however, would not venture to hint on what those discussions entailed, what options were being considered or whether the government was getting tangled in inter-jurisdictional issues.“We are in consultation as a federal government with other levels of government to try to coordinate our activities to ensure information is shared on this issue,” said Nicholson. “Everybody has a stake in this issue.”In the Speech from the Throne, delivered this past March, the government promised to “take additional action to address the disturbing number of unsolved cases of murdered and missing Aboriginal women. The Sisters in Spirit initiative has drawn particular attention to this pressing criminal justice priority.”The government then set aside $10 million in the federal budget. The Sisters In Spirit initiative researches and raises awareness on the high rates of violence against Aboriginal women and girls in Canada.Eight months later, it remains unclear what “additional action” the government plans to take. First Nations women’s groups have voiced their growing frustration at the silence emanating from Ottawa on the issue. Groups are also concerned they are not being consulted on the government’s plans.Thousands gathered in vigils across the country Monday to keep the memories of hundreds of murdered and missing First Nations, Metis and Inuit women alive.last_img read more

  • Deschamps wants to protect Kylian Mbappé from critics

first_imgFrance manager Didier Deschamps, wanted to come out in Kylian Mbappé defense one more time during a moment of several criticisms against him.In what can arguably be considered as one of the most complicated weeks for Kylian Mbappé since he started his professional career, the youngster really needed someone with a strong voice to come out and defend him from any kind of backlash and there is no one better than Didier Deschamps. The France manager has experienced first-hand what it’s like to have the teenager at his disposal, he was the most benefited manager from what Kylian has been able to do on the pitch and the criticism against him cannot be overstated because the player has made a few important mistakes in the last couple of weeks. The first one being the embarrassing moment in which he arrived late to a match during El Clasico Sunday, the player wanted to watch the La Liga match and decided that he would arrive late to PSG’s own derby against Olympique Marseille. This was regarded as a blatant violation of the club’s rules and the manager punished him by leaving him on the bench, only to come out during the second half and win the game for his squad. But the rookie mistakes weren’t over for Mbappé, this youngster has been making them since the season started.ICI C’EST PARIS 🔴🔵 pic.twitter.com/A8VrJQlA4E— Kylian Mbappé (@KMbappe) October 28, 2018In a complicated moment for him as he is starting to know what it feels like to be one of the biggest players on the planet, Kylian really needs to be careful with his surroundings and make the best decisions for his career because it’s still early in the game and things could escalate to a bad place very quickly. This past week, it was also revealed that Kylian is not being very well-adviced by his own family after a Football Leaks expose revealed the many demands he made when PSG came after him. This document that Der Spiegel published, left the player in a very difficult spot but his France manager wanted to focus on his game only this Thursday.“Kylian is able to do extraordinary things. Look at his stats. He is efficient. Look at the goals he scored with his club and with us. He also made assists,” said Deschamps on Thursday via Four Four Two.Opinion: Neymar will earn respect back from the PSG fans Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 14, 2019 After completing his incredible return to Parc des Princes, we predict that Neymar will earn the respect back from PSG supporters. The situation between Neymar…“He is a young player, who is doing very well at the moment. And he doesn’t ask anything. He is an offensive leader for PSG. For us as well.”“But he doesn’t try to take more space than he does now. He does already and it is natural. “Obviously, he can still improve and that is wonderful. But he is already very effective,” he added.Pour rappel, voici le classement de notre groupe d’UEFA Nations League ✊ #FiersdetreBleus pic.twitter.com/t3aN7TmxZh— Equipe de France ⭐⭐ (@equipedefrance) November 8, 2018These statements were on the day that the boss revealed the new call-up list for the final international break of 2018, as France will have to play two important matches before the end of the year. The first game will be on 16 November against The Netherlands, which will be a crucial UEFA Nations League match, the last competitive game of the year for the World Cup champions. The next match will be an international friendly against Uruguay, another important match that will give Didier Deschamps a chance to watch players who are not usually on his call-up lists and maybe give them a bigger opportunity for next year’s important commitments. Mbappé is obviously part of the list, he will most likely start in the match against the Dutch and he may rest for the second match against Uruguay. It’s clear that Deschamps considers him one of his biggest stars as he keeps proving with statements like this one, he also wants Kylian to feel like the French National Team is one of the only places where he can feel safe and where nobody will come after him with bad intentions.Les 23 Bleus qui joueront le dernier match de groupe de Nations League contre les Pays-Bas (16/11) et qui affronteront l’Uruguay au Stade de France (20/11) #FiersdetreBleus pic.twitter.com/63WUVSc8Jf— Equipe de France ⭐⭐ (@equipedefrance) November 8, 2018What do you think about Didier Deschamps’ strategy to take care of Kylian Mbappé from the outside world?
